Giza Plateau Historical Facts & Information

The history of Giza dates back more than hs.

Ancient Egyptians constructed pyramids which were elaborate burial tombs for their rulers. Looked upon as divine figures in need of being taken care in their afterlife, these massive monuments were stocked with food, clothing, furniture, jewelry and other provisions. The purpose was to keep the mummified royal corpses and their spirits comfortable.

These great pyramids were built for three rulers of the fourth dynasty - Menkaure, Khafre, and Khufu who ruled in approximately 2601-2515 BCE.

The Pyramid of Khufu or the Great Pyramid is the last of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and is still standing. The second-largest Giza pyramid was built for King Khufu's son Khafre and includes the Sphinx. The smallest one was built for Menkaure, believed to be Khufu's grandson.
